Helpful Information
Heating and Air Conditioning FAQs
Find answers to common questions about HVAC maintenance, repairs, efficiency and indoor comfort.
How often should I replace my HVAC filter?
Most filters should be checked monthly and replaced every one to
three months. Homes with pets, allergies or heavy dust may require
more frequent replacement.
Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
Possible causes include a dirty filter, blocked vents, incorrect
thermostat settings, a dirty outdoor unit or low refrigerant.
Check the filter and thermostat first. If cooling does not improve,
schedule professional service.
What should I do if my air conditioner freezes?
Turn off the cooling system and check the air filter. Restricted
airflow and refrigerant problems are common causes. Do not remove
ice with tools. Contact a technician if the problem returns.
Why does my HVAC system run constantly?
Extreme outdoor temperatures, a dirty filter, air leaks, incorrect
system sizing or equipment problems can cause long run times.
Continuous operation with poor comfort should be inspected.
Why is my furnace blowing cool air?
The fan may start before the air becomes warm. If cool air continues,
check the thermostat setting and filter. Ignition, flame-sensor or
airflow problems may require professional repair.
How often should my HVAC system be serviced?
Schedule air-conditioning maintenance in the spring and heating
maintenance in the fall. Regular service can improve reliability,
efficiency and equipment life.
How long does an HVAC system usually last?
Air conditioners and heat pumps commonly last 10 to 15 years.
Furnaces may last 15 to 20 years. Maintenance, installation quality,
climate and system usage all affect service life.
Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?
Consider the system’s age, repair cost, reliability, efficiency and
comfort. Frequent repairs or a major failure in an older system may
make replacement the better long-term investment.
Why are some rooms hotter or colder than others?
Uneven temperatures may result from blocked vents, duct leaks,
insulation problems, poor airflow or an improperly sized system.
An airflow evaluation can identify the cause.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a furnace?
A heat pump transfers heat between indoors and outdoors and can both
heat and cool a home. A furnace creates heat using gas, propane or
electricity and requires separate cooling equipment.
Does closing vents in unused rooms save energy?
Usually not. Closing multiple vents can increase pressure inside the
duct system, reduce efficiency and create comfort problems. A zoning
system is a better solution for controlling individual areas.
How do I know what size HVAC system my home needs?
Equipment should be selected using a professional load calculation
based on the home’s size, insulation, windows, layout and local
climate. Bigger equipment is not always better.
